I read her first book, <em>Extra Virgin</em>, years ago early on in my obsessive foray into travel narratives. It was laugh-out-loud hilarious. I loved the book, the characters, the region- everything about it. This second book is slightly more mature, with the same delightful sense of humor. It is out of print, but I was able to find it through Amazon. Now I am anxious to acquire her next two books so I can continue to share in her experiences in the Italian countryside. Wonderful!Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11814733294194444705noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-57795929257283750922007-07-23T13:41:00.000-04:002007-07-23T13:46:31.478-04:00A note about the photosI just wanted to mention that the photos I put up on this blog are ones that strike a cord with me. That doesn't mean that they are necessarily the best examples of what the artists are capable of. This is not meant to be an art blog but simply a place for me to celebrate my interest in Europe and related works.<br /><br />For additional works by the artist Mary Taitt please visit her blog, <a href="http://imagik.blogspot.com/">Imagik</a>.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-13621447193819310992007-07-23T13:39:00.001-04:002007-07-23T13:41:04.379-04:00Manor House<div style="MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7cryW0Bu_nbky6hQREAIQ4omja2sMSSYZd7DNkMo0PlVSRiKDx9S-BlJ_9acT5GH0ptwNKYwUqaBalDBMvWeOoB7Ozvfvb4j3TmZm8mxdK-YrPTEfba5q7Wrl12Nhuu4gOd9n/s1600-h/Italian+Manor+House+cr+IMG_9626+567-1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7cryW0Bu_nbky6hQREAIQ4omja2sMSSYZd7DNkMo0PlVSRiKDx9S-BlJ_9acT5GH0ptwNKYwUqaBalDBMvWeOoB7Ozvfvb4j3TmZm8mxdK-YrPTEfba5q7Wrl12Nhuu4gOd9n/s400/Italian+Manor+House+cr+IMG_9626+567-1.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div><br />Photo by Mary Taitt<div style='clear:both; text-align:CENTER'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-48528332756810782802007-07-21T18:09:00.000-04:002007-07-21T18:09:50.548-04:00Predjama Castle<div style="MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2JsOIhQDOWsbJX7izw4LI9PlGnC45jz-lT5QvQhJnfER3f0LE8_YJeAhiiDN4mbYgeEAWdm4yBWO9B_XjXwRPrD3lzSc3E3eEMcZ4ppMxFdg-qS_9mKAdfXoJXbtatpG9RIql/s1600-h/Predjama.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2JsOIhQDOWsbJX7izw4LI9PlGnC45jz-lT5QvQhJnfER3f0LE8_YJeAhiiDN4mbYgeEAWdm4yBWO9B_XjXwRPrD3lzSc3E3eEMcZ4ppMxFdg-qS_9mKAdfXoJXbtatpG9RIql/s400/Predjama.jpg" border="0" /></a> </div><br />photo by Mary Taitt<div style='clear:both; text-align:CENTER'><a href='http://picasa.google.com/blogger/' target='ext'><img src='http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif' alt='Posted by Picasa' style='border: 0px none ; padding: 0px; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; -moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial;' align='middle' border='0' /></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-23546758857982946272007-06-28T11:29:00.000-04:002007-06-28T11:33:48.878-04:00The Honeymoon is overThe honeymoon to Slovenia has pretty much ended. This is the second book of hers that I've read.<br /><br />Although thoroughly enjoyable, it did not make me want to rush out and plan a trip to France. The book is a collection of personal essays (in the form of chapters, but each could be taken independently) about the year she spent chaperoning college students during their time abroad. There were many amusing stories about the kids and a few historical tidbits about the country.<br /><br />She included recipes (although each of them stressed light or low-fat, which just served to irritate me) and advice on travel destinations in the region for romantic experiences.<br /><br />I would recommend the book for a light-hearted and fun read but not necessarily for a close look into the culture and countryside of Provence.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-6136422900478705232007-02-16T09:25:00.000-05:002007-02-16T09:35:42.729-05:00My Life in FranceI am about two thirds of the way through <em>My Life in France</em> by Julia Child.<br /><br />Before starting the book, my knowledge of Julia Child was limited to the occasional pause on PBS during one of her cooking shows to listen to her very unique voice. And the commonly referred to tendency she had for using alcohol in the cooking process (whether this is true or not I can't say).<br /><br />The book is excellent. It is well written and interesting, with enough humor and personal details to balance the cooking portions perfectly. I am not inclined towards cooking myself but I find it is a subject that appeals to me in print.<br /><br />So far she's taken us through living in Paris and Marseilles. Now they are based in Germany and she's hard at work on writing her first cookbook. I didn't expect, but have enjoyed, her opinions on American politics or her war experiences. It's amazing how different life was just a half century ago.<br /><br />One thing is for sure, I would love to be eating along side her as she feasts on all the French cuisine.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-49071313686615949502007-01-24T20:29:00.000-05:002007-01-24T20:32:09.415-05:00My Travel Shelf<div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX50uCPd-h-EoQzNkKKzIIp3kIrq6ydAu6oS5oIleVxAjOZ6e9QrWEyl3rnHTlJCjomjQi-qbidZo3mD7uKXj0qrb-glyUQArBZ4Bjd7JJByoEkZ4tPlTs0nyLITH8MEO4yifT/s1600-h/100_0574.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX50uCPd-h-EoQzNkKKzIIp3kIrq6ydAu6oS5oIleVxAjOZ6e9QrWEyl3rnHTlJCjomjQi-qbidZo3mD7uKXj0qrb-glyUQArBZ4Bjd7JJByoEkZ4tPlTs0nyLITH8MEO4yifT/s400/100_0574.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><br />Inspired by <a href="http://revdrmom.blogspot.com/2007/01/on-my-bookshelves.html" target="_blank">Rev. Moreover, our bus passed through Caserta, and Ann, you wouldn't believe it, in plain sight, there was a sign with the name 'Caiazzo' on it, & an arrow showing where to turn off! It gave me a bit of a start seeing that come at me, in white & green, just like any old sign on the Northway or Penn-Can Highway. For me, it was an added bonus & lift."<br /><br />-excerpt from a letter written by Grandpa Joe Ciaranello to Aunty Ann Ciaranello; their mother, Nicolina, was from Caserta and their father, Anthony, was from CaiazzoUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-1114349994766047722005-04-24T09:39:00.000-04:002007-01-18T12:52:55.193-05:00Belaggio, Italy<a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/img/269/5269/640/belaggio.jpg"><img style="BORDER-RIGHT: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #000000 1px solid; MARGIN: 2px; BORDER-LEFT: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #000000 1px solid" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/img/269/5269/320/belaggio.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />photo by Bea Bittermann <a href="http://www.hello.com/" target="ext"><img style="BORDER-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; BORDER-TOP: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; BACKGROUND: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; BORDER-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px; BORDER-BOTTOM: 0px" alt="Posted by Hello" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/pbh.gif" align="absMiddle" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-1114351017763546712005-04-24T09:37:00.000-04:002007-01-18T12:53:12.378-05:00Riva by night, Italy<a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/img/269/5269/640/rivabynight.jpg"><img style="BORDER-RIGHT: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #000000 1px solid; MARGIN: 2px; BORDER-LEFT: #000000 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #000000 1px solid" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/img/269/5269/320/rivabynight.jpg" border="0" /></a><br />photo by Bea Bittermann <a href="http://www.hello.com/" target="ext"><img style="BORDER-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; BORDER-TOP: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; BACKGROUND: none transparent scroll repeat 0% 0%; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; BORDER-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px; BORDER-BOTTOM: 0px" alt="Posted by Hello" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/pbh.gif" align="absMiddle" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-1114206785761666982005-04-22T17:46:00.000-04:002005-04-22T17:53:05.763-04:00Oct 28, 1985"We covered quite a bit of ground in Italy, from Milan to Como to Venice to Florence. The weather was mostly fair but hazy, going from hot the first part of the trip to cool toward the end, especially at night. I guess we liked Venice the best - a singular city to caress the senses, with spectacular views of lagoon & basilica, canals, bridges, & palaces. Of our 5 days there, not one was less than memorable, as we traveled about, on foot, or gondola, or waterbus."<br /><br />-excerpt from a letter written by Grandpa Joe Ciaranello to Aunty Ann CiaranelloUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12293709.post-1114015744782235932005-04-20T12:43:00.002-04:002009-01-02T14:26:26.698-05:00Italy<strong>A Tuscan Childhood</strong> by Kinta Beevor<br /><strong>Too Much Tuscan Sun</strong> by Dario Castagno<br /><strong>A Thousand Days in Venice,</strong><br /><strong>A Thousand Days in Tuscany,</strong><br /><strong>The Lady in the Palazzo</strong> by Marlena de Blasi<br /><strong>The Reluctant Tuscan</strong> by Phil Doran<br /><strong>As The Romans Do</strong> by Alan Epstein<br /><strong>An Italian Affair</strong> by Laura Fraser<br /><strong>Italian Days</strong> by Barbara Grizzuti Harrison<br /><strong>Extra Virgin,</strong><br /><strong>Ripe for the Picking</strong>,<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Journey to the South</span> by Annie Hawes<br /><strong>The Hills of Tuscany</strong> by Ferenc Mate<br /><strong>Under The Tuscan Sun</strong>,<br /><strong>Bella Tuscany</strong>,<br /><strong>In Tuscany</strong> by Frances Mayes<br /><strong>Italian Neighbors</strong> by Tim Parks<br /><strong>A House in Sicily</strong> by Daphne Phelps<br /><strong>The Tuscan Year</strong> by Elizabeth Romer<br /><strong>A Summer in Tuscany</strong> by Sandra J.
